Textile production is prehispanic. It is the most important handcraft for the Amuzgos, which women dominate due to traditional gender roles.

Girls begin learning to weave when they are about six or seven years old, starting with tasks as preparing cotton for spinning.

Each Amuzgo town has its specific name; fin San Pedro Amuzgos, they call themselves "Tzjon Non", which means "town of threads, soft thread or wick."

The Amuzgo language is part of the Oto-Manguean family, in the Mixtec subfamily. It is related to Triqui, Cuicatec, Chocho-popoloca, Mazatec, Ixcatec and Mixtec
